From the comments it would appear Ms. Dowd's latest attempt at humor has received mixed reviews. Her choice of punching bags, Mr. Cheney, lacks freshness, edge, and vitality. After all, Ms. Dowd has been writing about him for over 8 years. As tempting (and easy) as it is to write yet another Cheney piece, Ms. Dowd needs to move on. There are lots of characters out there deserving of her attention. She isn't going to get her edge back writing about the same old same old.

Hey Ms. Dowd, You've been hijacked. Obviously, somebody lifted your picture from the Times and created a Maureen Facebook entry. It must be fake cause you only have one Friend. Yet again, there might be some veracity to it... Yet another column about Cheney and of course you had to sneak in a sly reference to Clinton. Yawn. Earth to Mo - Bush and Cheney are gone and they ain't comin' back. You're sounding like Rick Little when he stayed with the Nixon shtick too long. Jeff Nardine, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Gawd Maureen, now you are ripping off your own comment posters. You are the one incarnating Norma Desmond. How clever of you though to think you could throw us off Did you read Frank Rich today? He is on target, thoughtful, informed and provocative as usual. jegrimberg, DC

"Insanely violent culture" ???? Pul-zee How about the Taliban?? ? Oh, excuse me..guess they don't use guns so they get a pass?? I can't believe all of the "America the evil" talk in these comments. What are these people thinking?? Guess with freedom of speech comes the freedom to be stupid. However, shooting off one's mouth/email is less dangerous than using other weapons?? richard, denver

How did this happen? The Bush administered pulled OUT of Afghanistan, stopped pursuing Bin Laden, and allowed the Taliban to gain strength unchecked for 8 years Now they're within spitting distance of nuclear weapons. Who will they point them at? Us, the great Satan, of course, and our allies. Anyone who claims this is Obama's fault has their head up their you-know-what, where it was when they voted for an idiot like George Bush.

I read 160 comments on this article. It's funny how so many people commented to say essentially the same thing-- that twitter is for people who have nothing to say, it's a waste of time, it's silly to share every inane thought in your head.... Then there were a whole slew of references to birds, as well as puns on the "twit" part of the name. Does no one see the irony here? (I'll give you a hint: 140 characters vs. 5000.)

I don't know Mr. Friedman. You make it sound like $12 an hour is a bad wage for stupid people. To me it sounds pretty good. I have a college degree, but haven't come across any of those $40-$50 dollar an hour jobs you are talking about... dparada78, stuart florida

I thought Twitter had to do with nervous little birds. I used to have wren boxes on my porch, but these nervous little critters never shut up and drove me crazy. The thought of twittering gives me similar feelings. I applaud you Maureen for asking the right questions of Twitter. In this case I actually like the magnificently descriptive word "twits." I thought there were laws to protect a child under 18 regardless of the situation. Why weren't her parents called in to the school before this took such an ugly turn? Where were the authorities? With all the adults involved in this situation, there was not one voice of reason that said, "Wait a minute. Let's stop and THINK before we get carried away." To #12: Do you have children? That was the most insensitive, repulsive comment. Do you work for that school system too? Sheila, NJ

"..You know, Darth Vader is really a kid from the desert planet near Crawford, and the true evil of the universe is the emperor who pulls all the strings.." George Bush was never Anakin Skywalker. But we have a hero that we love and who is occupying the oval office today. Simply astonishing. You and the NYT have completely lost it. With all there is to discuss and comment on in the world today, with all that is wrong with this administration, you write about arugula. I cannot believe the NYT still accepts your work. But then I can. Your last several articles have you coming off as a bona fide unapologetic left-leaning ultra elitist. rhw, MD

Cotton farmers are not the only ones getting subsidies, for storage and other reasons. You need to do your homework, Ms. Collins, in this area as well as others pointed out in other comments. Your 100%+ self-approval rating does not supplant the requirement for you to know what you are talking about. It makes life harder, but uninformed and inaccurate commentary is not just useless but destructive. No wonder NYT is going down the tubes. Harry Schell, Monrovia CA

"Some interesting posts here from many of the lefts finest I see. I'm particularly intrigued with Dan's (post 29) view of the situation. My guess is that Dan, like the vast majority of the other overly opinionated windbags here, is more comfortable hiding behind his computer. I'll be back from Afghanistan next year Dan and would be more than willing to meet you anytime, anywhere, to further discuss your opinions. — Rob, Orlando" And people wonder why someone in the Obama administration said that military veterans are more likely than average citizens to commit violent crimes. For every Rick Perry type of secession-loving America-quitter there are a hundred foreigners who'd risk their lives to come America for the chance to work hard to make a better life. And if it were possible to make such an exchange I'd say, "Do the trade, it's is well worth it" This right wing behavior is just like any two-year-old who cries and screams when their parents insist they eat their vegetables.
